OUR BEGINNING
Along with
our Pastor, we began visiting Bridges, a state youth facility, in Bronx, NY. We would show up faithfully every Tuesday with
prayer and song. Also, we gave the youths some enlightenment on family, life, hope, ideas and growth for the future as well
as identifying their paths and try guiding them in a new direction that will allow them to become more productive, prosperous,
and positive citizens. Somehow, this was dissatisfying. After seeing how we impacted most lives, we still had the desire to
do more, to create a post-prison service as well as offering numerous services for the entire community. After seeing the
news and hearing public opinions about our youth, we began to realize that they were not the children portrayed. Even though
we saw broken dreams, low self esteem and little hope for the future, we also saw an inner desire to do better in life and
right then we knew that all was not lost. After one on one mentoring and weekly interactions, we discovered that there were
various problems that cause our youth to astray, such as poverty, broken homes, lack of food, knowledge, resource, role models
and direction. For this reason, our Pastor formed First Contact Incorporated. First Contact opened its door to the public
and began distributing free food and clothing to the community twice a week. We serviced approximately 30 to 50 people each
day. From there, we began to develop other programs, such as our Employment and Educational Referral Service Program, Human
Service Program, and especially, our Youth Empowerment Program and Post Prison Program.
